Mustang Region

Mustang region is an ancient prohibited kingdom, bordered by the Tibetan plateau and sheltered by some of the highest peaks in the world, including Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, which are 8000 meters high. Strict tourist rules here have helped keep Tibetan traditions alive. Upper Mustang region was until 1992 a restricted demilitarized area, making it one of the most preserved regions in the world due to its relative isolation from the outside world, with a majority of the population still speaking traditional Tabetic. The name "Mustang" comes from the Tibetan word meaning, "Plain of Aspiration." In 1992, Upper Mustang was opened only to foreigners.
