Tour Overview

Maha Shivaratri Festival is a grand Hindu festival celebrated annually in the holy temple of Pashupatinath. Maha Shivaratri means the great night of Lord Shiva. People celebrate this festival to show respect to the wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Thus, Maha Shivaratri Festival Tour gives you an outlook at ancient Hindu culture and traditions; along with touring around centuries-old holy Pashupatinath Temple.

The great festival of Maha Shivaratri falls on the late winter of February/March. This festival symbolizes overcoming darkness and ignorance in one’s life and world. It is one of the oldest festivals among Hindus whose origin dates are still unknown.

During this major festival, devotees from all over Nepal and India visit the Pashupatinath Temple to worship; and get blessings from Lord Shiva. Hundreds of saints and sages covered with ashes wearing nothing visit this temple to take part in this annual ceremony.

On this day, married women pray to lord shiva for a long and healthy life of their husband; while unmarried girls pray for an ideal future husband. Throughout the day, the entire Pashupati region remains lively with devotees, religious dance and singing performances, rituals, pujas and more.

Unlike other Hindus Festivals in Nepal, Maha Shivaratri Festival is a night festival. Devotees gather near the bank of holy Bagmati river for grand Aarti Ceremony. Arati ceremony is a Hindu ritual where the top-class priest offers light to lord shiva; while chanting stotram of Lord Shiva.

Throughout the night, devotees keep singing devotional songs along with tandav dance.

If you want to taste ancient Hindu culture, history, tradition, rituals; then Maha Shivaratri Festival Tour in Nepal is best for you.
