Overview

The Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek is a spectacular choice for anyone seeking a relatively short yet rewarding trekking experience in Nepal’s iconic Annapurna region. It’s follows a grouping of two popular trekking routes: the Poon Hill Trek and the Mardi Himal Trek. This journey combines the beauty and popularity of Poon Hill (3,210 m) with the peacefulness, serene and less-traveled trails of Mardi Himal (5,587 m). This creates a unique experience that balances cultural immersion, scenic magnificence, and a moderate level of physical challenge. The Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek is a great substitute for the busy Annapurna Base Camp route and offers similar Himalayan views in a shorter time.

Poon Hill Mardi Trek is special for its diverse landscapes, from terraced farmlands and rhododendron forests to alpine meadows. Including awe-inspiring views of some of the world’s tallest peaks, such as Annapurna South (7,219 m), Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) (6,993 m), and Himalchuli (7,893 m). Trekkers can also experience the culture of the Magar and Gurung communities and enjoy warm local hospitality.

Furthermore…

Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek has two renowned trails, beginning with the Poon Hill Trek and continuing seamlessly into the Mardi Himal Trek. The Poon Hill section offers sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, rhododendron forests, and friendly local communities. The Mardi Himal portion of the trek provides spectacular views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Mardi Himal itself. Also, it offers a sense of discovery, as it remains relatively untouched and far from the crowded trails of other popular treks. The viewpoints along the trek offer magical sunrise and sunset experiences over the snow-capped peaks. Diverse wildlife can be spotted in the forests, including various bird species and Himalayan animals. High Camp (3,580 m) and Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m) offer peaceful surroundings and stunning views.

Unlike some of the more challenging treks in Nepal, Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek journey is accessible to people who has moderate fitness levels. It is because the route is designed to minimize risks related to altitude sickness as most of the trek remains below 3,500 meters, with only the final leg to Mardi Himal Base Camp reaching higher evaluations.

Next day, you will drive to Birethanti from Pokhara for around an hour and fifteen minutes, the starting point of the trek, and then trek through lush forests and terraced fields to reach Tikhedhunga or Ulleri. Next day, you will continue your trek through rhododendron forests, passing Banthanti and making your way to Ghorepani, a popular stop with stunning mountain views. On the next day, you will wake up early to hike to Poon Hill for an unforgettable sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, before heading back to Ghorepani for breakfast.

Altitude Profile & Highest Point of Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek

The Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek features a gradual altitude gain, making it ideal for trekkers who want to acclimatize comfortably while exploring both scenic and less-crowded trails. The journey begins from the lower elevations of Birethanti (1,025m) and steadily rises through Ulleri and Ghorepani before reaching the iconic viewpoint of Poon Hill at 3,210m. This early climb helps trekkers adjust to the altitude naturally while enjoying one of the best sunrise panoramas in Nepal, with sweeping views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.
After descending to Tadapani and Ghandruk, the Mardi Himal section starts with a gentle ascent to Forest Camp (2,520m), Low Camp (2,970m), and High Camp (3,580m). The final highlight of the route is the dramatic hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500m, which is the highest point of the Poon Hill to Mardi Himal Trek. From here, trekkers are rewarded with close-up views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and the ridgeline stretching toward Mardi Himal.
This altitude profile makes the Poon Hill Mardi Himal combined trek suitable for beginners to intermediate trekkers, as the gradual progression significantly reduces the risk of altitude-related problems while still offering a true Himalayan adventure.

Why Combine Poon Hill with Mardi Himal?

Combining these two iconic trekking routes creates a unique blend of classic and off-the-beaten-path experiences, making the Poon Hill to Mardi Himal Trek one of the most rewarding adventures in the Annapurna region. The Poon Hill section offers a traditional cultural experience with Gurung and Magar villages, lush forests, and the famous Poon Hill sunrise at 3,210m, which is considered one of the top viewpoints in Nepal. This part of the trek is lively, scenic, and rich in cultural encounters.
In contrast, the Mardi Himal Trek section provides a remote, peaceful, and less-crowded atmosphere. After leaving Ghandruk and Landruk, the trail becomes quieter as you approach Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp. This allows trekkers to enjoy serene ridge walks with uninterrupted views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range.
By combining both routes, trekkers get the best of both worlds:

  • Classic cultural trekking + panoramic sunrise (Poon Hill)
  • Quiet, adventurous ridge trail + close-up Himalayan views (Mardi Himal)
  • Better acclimatization due to gradual altitude gain
  • More diverse landscapes, vegetation, and village lifestyles

For those seeking a rich and varied Himalayan experience, the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek is one of the most balanced and scenic itineraries.

FAQ

FAQ

Is a licensed guide required for the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek?

Yes. According to the latest trekking regulations, foreign trekkers must hire a licensed guide for many of the higher-altitude and restricted trekking routes like Mardi Himal. A guide also helps with navigation, acclimatization pacing, and cultural insights.

What is the realistic cost per day for the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek?

Based on independent trekking reports, the guide fee is roughly US$ 25/day. Accommodation and food costs increase with altitude. For example, food higher up can be expensive because porters or donkeys must carry supplies. Full packages (transport, permit, guide, food) for this combined trek can cost around US$ 1,405 to US$ 2,150, depending on the group and service level.

How dangerous is altitude sickness on Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek?

Altitude sickness risk is moderate. Since the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek combines lower altitude (Poon Hill at 3,210 m) with higher-altitude sections (Mardi Himal Base Camp up to 4,500 m), trekkers should be prepared. Guides often help with pacing and breathing techniques to minimize risk.

What is the electricity and charging situation on the Poon Hill Mardi Himal trail?

On the Poon Hill Mardi Himal trail, electricity exists in most tea houses, but at higher altitude (particularly at High Camp and Base Camp), power often comes from solar, meaning limited availability. Charging devices may come with a fee, and outlets are commonly in dining rooms, not private rooms. It’s recommended to carry a power bank and bring appropriate plug adapters.

What kind of fitness is needed for Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek?

The Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek is moderately difficult, not technical, but requires good cardiovascular fitness. Expect long uphill and downhill sections, uneven terrain, and steep climbs, especially when approaching High Camp and Mardi Himal. Training with regular aerobic exercises beforehand will make the journey much more enjoyable.

How reliable is the phone signal and internet along the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek?

Connectivity can be very limited. In remote villages along the route, cell coverage may drop, and Wi-Fi is not guaranteed. As a result, don’t count on reliable mobile data during the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek, so bring a SIM with good network coverage and inform someone in Pokhara of your itinerary.

Is travel insurance mandatory for the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek?

While not always legally required, travel insurance that covers trekking up to 4,500 m (or beyond) is highly recommended. Trip operators advise buying policies that include high-altitude rescue, medical evacuation, and trip cancellation.

What are the lodging and food conditions on the Poon Hill Trek and Mardi Himal Trek?

On the Poon Hill Trek and Mardi Himal Trek, accommodation is mainly in basic tea houses and lodges, especially above Low Camp. In Poon Hill/Ghorepani, lodges are more developed with more options. Food becomes more limited (and more expensive) as you go higher, however foods like dal bhat, noodles, porridge, and tea are available.

Can you trek independently, or do you need to go with a group for Poon Hill Mardi Himal?

Independent trekking is possible in many parts, but due to updated regulation, hiring a licensed guide is now required if you are a foreigner on restricted/regulated routes. For safety and better acclimatization, trekking in a small group or with a guide is strongly recommended for Poon Hill Trek with Mardi Himal.

What additional challenges are unique to the combined Poon Hill and Mardi Himal route compared to Poon Hill alone?

The following challenges are unique to the combined Poon Hill and Mardi Himal route compared to Poon Hill alone.

  • Greater altitude variation: Poon Hill is relatively low (3,210 m), but Mardi Himal Base Camp goes up to 4,500 m, increasing the risk of altitude issues.
  • Less “touristed” trail: Past High Camp, the route becomes more secluded, with fewer trekkers and more basic facilities.
  • Increased cost and logistics: Supplies get more expensive as altitude increases, and the trek requires more days, more food, and more careful planning.

Is the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek more crowded or more remote?

Part of the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek is quite popular (especially Poon Hill), but once you head into the Mardi Himal section, and past High Camp, the trail becomes much more secluded. This makes it an appealing option for trekkers who want some of the classic Annapurna views but also wish to get off the beaten path.

How long does the Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek normally take?

A typical Poon Hill Mardi Himal Trek itinerary is 10-12 days, depending on your pace and whether you take rest or acclimatization days. Shorter itineraries may skip or shorten certain sections, but it’s recommended to allow enough time for the ascent to Mardi Himal Base Camp safely.
