Upper Dolpo Trekking

Upper Dolpo Trekking

Restricted for trekking to foreigners until 1989, the Upper Dolpo is a high altitude region situated at the rain-shadowed side of the Himalaya in the western Nepal. The region's major highlights are its desolate hills, a thrilling hardcore landscape, surrounded by impressive peaks and ever strive for casting a spell on the trekkers. Here, you will visit ancient and isolated Tibetan villages, sites of spectacular lakes, authentic Buddhist monasteries and explore plentiful wildlife (including Blue sheep, mountain goat, jackal, wolf and snow leopard). The trekking trail begins by meandering through pine and cedar forest with views of the massive Dhaulagiri range in the backdrop. Upper Dolpo region being the most remote and least developed in Nepal, trekking is only for those with a true sense of adventure.

The people of Upper Dolpo are generally adherents of Bön, a religion whose origins predate Buddhism but whose modern form is officially accepted as the fifth school of Tibetan Buddhism. This remote region has preserved its Tibetan culture in relatively pure form, making it attractive to western tourists. It was in the Upper Dolpo where the 1999 Oscar-nominated film 'Himalaya', and more recently a German documentary 'Dolpo Tulku' were shot out. In spite of almost inaccessibility to the region and government imposed restrictions to visit Upper Dolpo, it has become a very popular Destinations among the foreign trekkers.

The mysterious Bon Po religion and traditional lifestyle of the people of Upper Dolpo make every trekker much curious to explore it.

There are several Buddhist Gompas managed by the Lamas individually, they regulate the rules and religious performance, and the lamas also nominate the successor for the continuation of their responsibilities. They have still preserved the old and original religious text of great importance in Gompas. One can scrutinize the traditional Amchi (Traditional doctor) practice, tantrism and shamanism. Since precious herbs are found in plenty in this region, most of the sick people are treated with locally prepared herbal medicines. Overall, the life style of this region is totally traditional as they are out of reach with the modernized world.

Overall its landscape, natural diversity, hardship of living, socio-culturally importance and typical traditional activities with the enchanting environment of the region gives unique essence of life.
