Mera Peak Climbing

Mera Peak Climbing

Mera peak (6654m) is the highest 'trekking peaks' in Nepal. Situated in the Everest region to the east of the main Khumbu trekking trails, the peak is quite popular. The ascent of the peak is technically straightforward, however, the heavy snow and the web of crevasses can make the way longer to climb the summit. In addition, the charm of climbing Mera Peak, the trek to its base camp from Lukla is rewarding for experiencing less-visited and yet unspoiled region of Hinku valley covered with beautiful forest. There are several approaches to the base camp besides the easy and normal route. The routes crossing Amphu Laptsa (5,780m) and the Mingbo La (5,871m) offer the genuine adventure with spectacular scenery through remote glaciated valleys and passes.

The base camp can be set up at 5,300m near Mera La on the Hongu side in the moraine below the ice. From here a high camp is set up at 5,800m near a rocky ledge on the Mera Glacier. The high camp proves to be one of the most glorious viewpoints in Nepal offering the sweeping views of Kanchanjunga, Chamlang, Makalu, Baruntse and Amadablam, Cho Oyu and Kangtega from east to west. The giant faces of Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse are seen in the north.

The journey to Mera peak climbing starts with a scenic flight to Lukla. From Lukla we walk through different places such as Puiyan, Pangkongma, Kobe, Tangnag, Khare where you'd stay for the acclimatization so that you can arrive Mera Base Camp and trek to High camp. From there, you can climb Mera Peak summit and trek back to Mera Base Camp. It will take probably 14 (fourteen) days for adventurous trekking activities in Mera Peak region. Hiking, through busy trails to Everest Base Camp, Mera peak climbing trip leads to sparsely inhabited Hindu and Hongu valley which is heavily wooded. Both Hinku and Hongu valley is used to graze the animals during the grass-growing monsoon.
