Lower Dolpo Trekking

Lower Dolpo Trekking

Lower Dolpo is located in the north- west part of Nepal and it is less touristic but naturally rich. Trekking to Lower Dolpo gives you a wonderful opportunity to explore the spectacular landscape, rich culture and tradition .It means this remote and rugged protected area is attractive both scenically and culturally. The entire Lower Dolpo area is protected by Shey-Phoksundo National Park with various rare and endangered species of wildlife such as snow-leopard, blue sheep, ghoral, musk deer, mountain goat, and wolf and plants diversity. No high Himalayan peaks can be seen except lots of good high altitude scenery and clear water of Phoksumdo Lake .

Num-La (5190 m) and Baga-La pass (5115m) give you real adventurous walking along the great Himalayan trail .On the other hand, unique tradition and culture of Dho Tarap and Ringmo villages, many monasteries, caves and waterfall gives you the most entertaining part of your holiday. The Lower Dolpo is home to Thakuri, Chhetri and Brahmin( Hindu upper caste) and they subsist on agricultural farming producing buckwheat, wheat and potatoes.

Lower Dolpo is a government- controlled trekking Destinations in Nepal and only limited foreign travelers are permitted to trek in the Lower Dolpo area each year with a special permit from Nepal Government. It was only in 1989 that Dolpo was opened to foreigners. Until then the region was restricted because of its proximity to the Tibetan border.

Lower Dolpo Trekking begins from Juphal after a short flight from Nepalgunj. From Juphal the trail proceeds to Dunai and further way up. As the trekking trail is very challenging, it demands previous trekking experience. Normal trekking experience is not enough for this trek.

From November to April almost the entire area of the Lower Dolpo is covered by snow and the local inhabitants temporarily migrate to lower area with their cattle to protect from the extreme cold and safety.
