Kanchanjunga Base Camp Trekking

Kanchanjunga Base Camp Trekking

Kanchenjunga is one of the least explored and wilderness regions in Nepal bordering with the Indian state of Sikkim. Trekking to Base Camp of Kanchanjunga is a long and challenging one in the far eastern part of Nepal. This trekking is best suited to those who love to explore the wilderness and indigenous culture. You'll trek through tropical to alpine climatic zones, exploring various landscape and vegetation, encountering diverse ethnic groups of people. Along the route you will visit various villages inhabited by Rai and Limbu ethnic groups and pass through rhododendron, birch and fir forests enjoying the spectacular views of Jannu, Khabru and north face of Kanchenjunga. If you are lucky, you might be encountering the 'Yeti' on the way. During the trek you walk through the stunningly beautiful and ecologically diverse Kanchenjunga Conservation Area abundant with pristine forests, alpine meadows and high altitude glaciers. The conservation area is well managed by the local communities in association with the WWF and has been a home to the endangered snow leopard and red panda, as well as the vulnerable Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard and Assamese macaque (monkeys).

Trekking to Kanchenjunga Base Camp begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Taplejung (Suketar). From Suketar you will walk to Chauki passing through Mitlung, Ghunsa, Khambachen and Lhonak villages until you reach to Pangpema (5,140m) which is the base camp for expeditions attempting the North Face of Kanchenjunga II and the culmination of the first part of the trek. Trekking around the base camp you will explore valley and the rolling-meadows with the gazing yaks herded by the locals. Spring and autumn will be the best season for trekking into Kanchenjunga Base Camp.
