Helambu Trekking

Helambu Trekking

Helambu is the name of a village which lies 75 km north east of Kathmandu. This village is the home of the Hyalmo, an ethnic group of Nepal similar to Sherpa of Everest region in physical features. But in terms of culture, costume and dialect Hyolmo is different from Sherpa communities of Everest region. The word 'Helambu' comes from the word Hyolmo and trekking to Helambu is recommended for those who don't have much time in Nepal but still want to do a short and lower altitude trekking to experience Buddhist culture, tradition, visit ancient monasteries and rural life of Nepal.

The Helambu region begins at the Lauribina La Pass, and covers the entire Melamchi valley. Helambu trekking offers a scenic circuit trail through various villages, Buddhist monasteries, apple orchards and spectacular mountain views. You will walk through colorful rhododendron and pine forests gently climbing uphill. It will be a memorable experience to watch varieties of birds and wild flowers along the trail.

On Helambu trekking there is no possibility of having altitude sickness and as such any family groups including children can do trekking to Helambu region. Helambu trekking is easy and enjoyable for all. No previous trekking experience is required for this trekking. The best time for Helambu trekking is spring and autumn. In the winter there is a chance of snowfall at Tharepati.

Sundarijal is the starting point of Helambu trekking easily accessible by road from Kathmandu. After Sundarijal you will walk through various villages such as Chisopani, Kutumsang, Magin Goth, Tharepati, Melemchigaun reaching the highest elevation at 3650 m.
