Annapurna Sanctuary Trekking

Annapurna Sanctuary Trekking

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek also called Annapurna Base Camp Trek is “a high glacial basin lying forty km directly north of Pokhara. This high glacial basin looks like oval-shaped plateau perched at an altitude of over 4000 m. and is encircled by the Annapurna mountain range, most of the peaks are over 7000 m. The prime highlights of the Annapurna sanctuary is to observe sunrise and sunset views over Annapurna range that draws hundreds of trekkers from all over the world. The sanctuary is also believed to be the abode to several Hindu deities and animistic gods. The Annapurna Sanctuary is now a part of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, which restricts the local villagers to collect firewood and graze domestic animals. Annapurna Sanctuary trekking is considered one of the greatest of Himalayan treks which offer some of the most fascinating insights into the local culture, tradition and life style of one of the ethnic groups of Nepal. Trekking to Annapurna Sanctuary starts from low elevation of 800 m involving several ascents and descents but not so difficult until you reach uninhabited wilderness area of the base camp at the elevation of over 4000 m which is the highest point of the trek. While trekking from low altitude to higher altitude, you will notice the changes in climate from sub tropical to alpine.

You will gently trek through settlements, terraced rice fields, Rhododendron forests, and waterfalls with a great view of mountain scenery. The trail to Annapurna Sanctuary follows the Modi Khola (river) and keeps continuing until you reach the large rock overhanging, known as Hinku Cave. Upon reaching the desolate area of the base camp you will notice that the vegetation is slowly getting thin and the gorge narrows. Steep snow-clad ridges falling from Hiunchuli on the left and Machhapuchhare on the right form the entrance to the sanctuary. While on trek you will enjoy great views of Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, Ganesh Himal as well as a chance to meet with other fellow travelers from around the world. For trekking to Annapurna Sanctuary every trekker requires Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS card. The best season for Annapurna sanctuary trek are Spring (March to May) Autumn (September to December). Annapurna sanctuary trekking is recommendable for beginners and those who love nature and want to explore unique culture, tradition of Nepal particularly in the Annapurna region and enjoy with various flora, fauna and panoramic view of the Himalayan range without ascending higher altitude.
